Hemangiomas are benign proliferations of blood vessels. Infantile lesions appear in the first weeks of life, grow for several months, then slowly involute; adult cherry angiomas are small, permanent red papules that simply accumulate with age.

Not every lesion needs treatment. Intervention is advised when a hemangioma sits near the eye, lip or airway, ulcerates, or is likely to leave a lasting mark — and for adults, when appearance or bleeding is the concern. Vascular laser closes the vessels within the lesion without cutting.
